Mark Ijlal came to America with two things.

He remembers that day like it happened only minutes ago because he wanted to buy a cup of coffee after the long uncomfortable flight that took him 9,000 miles away from his country to a new land of dreams called America.

After landing on Metro Detroit airport, he locked himself in a stall in the men’s restroom to count what he had bought back besides his determination to succeed.

He had $243.

He decided to pass on the coffee because that one cup would have depleted his net worth by 5%.

It took him six years after working minimum wage jobs in retail stores to start his own business. Over the last decade he has built five successful businesses, each one of them started from scratch and getting bulk of its sales and profits from his online marketing strategies.

So when Dean Killingbeck thought of writing a complete 12 month Action Plan for independent restaurants, he wanted somebody who was not a armchair quarterback, meaning a consultant type guy who had bunch of theories on what might work in the real world but has never spent a $1 of his own money on marketing or testing with real dollars. He thought of Mark Ijlal immediately as he has seen Mark in action for the last three years and even growing his businesses during the recession.
